Some Helpful Tips As We Start The New Year
Often we see everyone making their new year’s resolutions and goals, wanting to make big changes such as improve our health, start working out, being more active, wanting to be more financially secure or even trying to cut down or eliminate alcohol. All of these goals and resolutions are great, but when we set big goals, it can sometimes be difficult to sustain these changes only to have many of them fall by the waist side by mid-February. There are a few tips to help you to not only set goals, but also to help keep these changes sustainable and become part of your daily routine and habits.
1.Make small changes: When we try to make big changes, they are often harder to maintain and sustain. It may be helpful to break your goals down into smaller steps, that way you can build momentum as you accomplish them each step of the way.
2. Be aware of the “all or nothing” thinking trap: Setting new goals, routines and making changes can be difficult especially at the start. Sometimes you’re not going to get it perfect right away. It’s okay if you don’t get it right away, just be patient with yourself. Remind yourself that tomorrow is a new day and over time, you can and will build consistency. If you struggle with making the change, don’t feel like you’re a failure and stop, but rather try to break it down into smaller steps that are achievable.
3.Make goals that are meaningful to you: Sometimes we’re trying to keep up with appearances of having it all together (thank you social media), and we may want to be as accomplished as everyone else or want to make new resolutions or goals because we feel we “should”. If fallen into that mindset, it may be difficult to stay motivated. Instead, if you make smaller goals that are meaningful to you, it might help you feel more motivated to stick with the changes.
Overall, making changes and goals and new year’s resolutions can be difficult to maintain or sustain, but if we stick with the small things and build off these wins, it can keep us motivated to keep it going. Change can be difficult, but if we approach it in the right way, sometimes we can thrive and do amazing things with change.
